Nikolas Matthes, Assistant Vice President, State Healthcare Assessment, has more than 20 years of experience in health care performance measurement. He led multi-disciplinary teams to develop clinical measurement, benchmarking, and analytics solutions and clinical quality measures across a multitude of care settings in state, federal, and private sectors, both in the United States and internationally. His professional experience spans not-for-profit organizations, trade associations and the health care industry. His health care quality measure expertise includes patient level clinical quality, electronic clinical quality, and nursing sensitive quality measures as well as survey-based patient reported outcome and patient experience measurement.
Dr. Matthes served on the National Quality Forum’s Technical Expert Panel for Outcomes and Efficiency Measures and the Measure Application Workgroup for Hospitals, as well as on CMS’ Electronic Clinical Quality Measure Development and Maintenance for Eligible Professionals Technical Expert Panel. He was principal investigator for AHRQ’s MONAHRQ initiative developing software enabling organizations to generate a health care quality reporting website.

Dr. Matthes holds an adjunct appointment as Assistant Professor in Health Policy & Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he teaches graduate level classes on Performance Measurement in Health Care.

Dr. Matthes earned his medical degree from the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, a doctorate from the Universität Heidelberg, Germany, a Master of Science from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
